5 Steps to a Stronger SME Program
We wrote recently about including more of your employees to create a robust subject matter expert program to provide a stronger bench of thought leaders. We talked about the benefits of such a move here.
Once you’ve identified potential SMEs, you need to develop them into effective thought leaders. Here are five ways to get that done.
- Subject definition: Work with each expert to clearly define their specific area of expertise. The more focused, the better.
- Message development: Help them articulate their perspective on key industry issues and how it aligns with your company’s position.
- Communications training: Provide coaching on public speaking, media interviews, and content creation.
- Starter opportunities: Begin with lower-pressure opportunities like internal presentations, blog posts, or podcast interviews.
- Feedback and refinement: After each opportunity, provide constructive feedback and help them refine their approach.
Remember, not everyone will become a keynote speaker or media spokesperson. Some may excel at writing, others at video content, and others at customer-facing events. Play to each person’s strengths.
