Brian Vieaux in Rick’s Room

In this episode of Rick’s Room, host Rick Grant sits down with Brian Vieaux, President of MISMO, for an in-depth discussion about leadership, industry service, and why data standards matter more than ever in an AI-driven mortgage ecosystem.

Drawing on his background as a lifelong mortgage banker, followed by years on the technology vendor side, Vieaux saw MISMO as a unique opportunity to give back to the industry at scale. Rather than serving a single company or brand, MISMO allows him to serve the entire mortgage ecosystem as a nonprofit organization built by and for the industry.

A central theme of the conversation is the relationship between AI and data quality. Vieaux emphasizes that artificial intelligence is only as effective as the data that feeds it. Just as poor data produces unreliable results in underwriting models, poorly structured or inconsistent data will undermine AI-driven workflows. This reality places MISMO at a critical inflection point: enabling responsible, scalable AI adoption through standardized, trusted data frameworks.

The discussion also highlights MISMO’s collaborative model. Vieaux describes the organization’s 34 Development Work Groups (DWGs), made up of volunteer subject matter experts who contribute time, expertise, and resources to solve industry-wide challenges. This community-driven approach, he says, is the “magic” of MISMO.

Hi, and welcome back to Rick’s Room. I’m Rick Grant, and I created this show to give myself more opportunities to talk with industry leaders—the same kinds of conversations I usually have at conferences, except you can’t be at a conference every day.

Today is no exception. You may know my guest from his work with the Michigan Mortgage Lenders Association, from his time at Flagstar, or more recently from building and launching FinLocker. Today, he’s the President of MISMO. Brian Vieaux—thanks for being with me.

I’ve long thought MISMO has done fantastic work, but what I’ve seen since you stepped into this role has really impressed me. Let’s start with why you made the move. FinLocker was an exciting piece of technology, and you worked hard on it. What led you here?

Brian Vieaux:
Great question. I actually wasn’t looking to make a change at all. I was very proud of what we built at FinLocker and the traction we were getting. I spent six years there—many people think I was the founder, but I wasn’t, though I do have some founder scars.

FinLocker addresses a massive need: educating and assisting first-time homebuyers early in their journey, and there’s no better way to do that than through local loan officers. I still believe strongly in what they’re building.

When the MISMO opportunity came up, my first reaction was no. I didn’t see myself as a trade association guy. But as I spoke with board members, it became clear that many of the same skills I used to elevate FinLocker’s brand were needed to elevate MISMO’s visibility and engagement.

MISMO has been around for 26 years and has done incredible work—but we want to do more. That means bringing more of the mortgage ecosystem into the community—figuratively, literally, and economically.

For me, this felt like a chance to give back. I’ve spent 30 years in traditional lending, six years on the technology side, and if this is the final chapter of my career, serving the industry through MISMO feels like a meaningful way to close the book and hopefully leave a legacy.

Rick Grant:
That combination of lender, technology, and now nonprofit experience really does make you uniquely suited for this role. How do you view MISMO’s mission from where you sit now—especially with AI dominating the conversation?

Brian Vieaux:
We’re in 2026, and AI is everywhere. But at its core, AI is a model—just like desktop underwriting systems were models years ago. If you put bad data into a model, you get unreliable outputs.

As we apply AI to automate workflows and create efficiencies, the data has to be right first. Otherwise, we’ll just scale bad processes. This is where MISMO can play a much bigger role—helping the industry adopt AI responsibly and uniformly, without constantly having to recheck every step in the loan process.

Rick Grant:
That really brings MISMO’s original message back into focus—data quality, mapping, and standards. How are you taking advantage of this renewed urgency?

Brian Vieaux:
It’s already happening. In just my first few months, I’ve had multiple AI startups and new market entrants reach out and say, “We’re building on MISMO—can you help?”

Over 26 years, MISMO has developed around 200 standards. If you’re entering this industry, why wouldn’t you build on the rails that already exist? What’s encouraging is that both new entrants and legacy platforms modernizing their tech stacks are recognizing the value of standards.

My role is to keep educating the industry at scale so everyone—from lenders building internal tools to startups launching new platforms—starts from a foundation that experts have refined for decades.

Rick Grant:
That’s the culmination of a vision early MISMO leaders talked about years ago—creating something others could build on. And now you’re expanding access by streaming meetings.

Brian Vieaux:
Exactly. At our Winter Summit in Amelia Island, we’re livestreaming key sessions, including a workshop on the Mortgage Compliance Dataset and all 34 development work groups. These work groups are the magic of MISMO—volunteer subject matter experts solving big industry problems, not for their own companies, but for the entire ecosystem.

Our goal is to make this work visible and accessible so people realize: this is for them.

Rick Grant:
Brian, I’m excited about where you’re taking MISMO and hope you’ll come back again soon.

Brian Vieaux:
I’d love to. Thanks for having me.
