Want to Stand Out in a Crowded Inbox? Try This.
When was the last time a LinkedIn message actually stopped you in your tracks?
In today’s world of endless text-based outreach, the quickest way to get ignored is to blend in. So here’s a bold suggestion: stop typing—and start talking. Literally.
If you’re looking to cut through the noise and connect with prospects in a way that feels personal, human, and unmistakably unique, you should be sending voice messages on LinkedIn.
Yes, voice messages. And yes, they work.
The One-Two Punch: Novelty and Authenticity
LinkedIn voice messages aren’t new—but they are underused, which is precisely why they’re so effective. Most professionals haven’t even noticed the microphone icon in their mobile LinkedIn app, let alone used it to reach out to someone. When they do receive a voice message, it makes them pause. It feels intentional. Real. Different.
In the same time it takes to peck out a few lines of uninspired text, you can deliver a warm, confident pitch that communicates tone, energy, and professionalism—things no emoji can truly capture. And while AI and automation dominate so much of modern outreach, a real human voice stands out.
Here’s How to Do It
Sending a voice message through LinkedIn is easy—but only available through the mobile app. Here’s the play-by-play:
- Open the LinkedIn mobile app (iOS or Android).
- Tap the Messaging icon in the top right corner.
- Select a 1st-degree connection (you must already be connected).
- Tap the Microphone icon in the message box.
- Hold down the mic button to record your message.
- Release to send. If you change your mind, swipe away from the mic icon while holding it.
You may be prompted to allow microphone access the first time—just follow the prompts.
It’s that simple. And if your message is thoughtful and relevant, it might be the most memorable 60 seconds in someone’s inbox all week.
In a market where differentiation matters more than ever, this tactic is low-effort and high-impact. And while not every contact will respond, those who do will remember you. That’s the first step toward building the kind of relationship that drives results.
