Molly Dowdy in Rick’s Room
In this episode of Rick’s Room, Rick Grant welcomes longtime mortgage industry leader Molly Dowdy, founder of Athena’s Council, a private community designed to support, connect, and advance women across mortgage servicing and fintech.
Molly explains that Athena’s Council was born from a recurring pattern she observed throughout her career: exceptionally talented women—both seasoned leaders and newcomers—often feel isolated in the mortgage and fintech industries. Many lack trusted peers who can provide perspective, collaboration, and real mentorship. Athena’s Council exists to solve that problem by fostering genuine relationships among women on similar career paths.
The community is intentionally intergenerational. It welcomes women who are building long-term careers in the industry as well as established executives who want to mentor, open doors, and leave a legacy. Molly emphasizes that longevity, through market cycles, consolidation, and career transitions, is a shared goal.
The guiding principle is simple: careers in mortgage and fintech are constantly evolving, and no one should have to navigate that journey alone.

Rick Grant:
Hi, and welcome back to Rick’s Room. This is the podcast we built to capture that moment at the end of a long trade-show day—when you finally sit down with someone you’ve been wanting to talk to all day and really catch up.
Today’s guest is exactly the kind of person I’d chase down for that conversation. She’s a longtime friend and someone many of you know well if you’ve spent any time in the mortgage industry. She’s the founder of Athena’s Council. Please join me in welcoming Molly Dowy. Molly, thanks for being here.
Molly Dowdy:
Thanks, Rick. I’m excited to catch up—and I agree, it’s been way too long.
Rick:
When we first met years ago, you were working for a large software company on the appraisal side. Since then, I’ve watched you do some amazing things. Before we talk about your journey, tell me about Athena’s Council and what you’re building.
Molly:
Athena’s Council is a private community for women in mortgage servicing and fintech. It’s a place where women collaborate, support each other, and grow their careers together.
I kept seeing the same pattern over and over—brilliant, accomplished women, along with women just entering the industry, feeling isolated. They didn’t have peers who could offer perspective or say, “I’ve seen this before,” or “Here’s how I handled that.” Athena’s Council is about building real friendships with women who are walking similar paths.
Rick:
That’s so important—especially in an industry that’s complex, regulated, and hard to master. When you bring talented women together and help them mentor the next generation, that has a huge impact. Who is Athena’s Council for?
Molly:
It’s for any woman who wants a long-term career in our industry—through market shifts, consolidation, and change. It’s also for women who’ve already built phenomenal careers and are ready to mentor, open doors, and help the next generation step into leadership.
Rick:
Both of us have daughters, and a lot of young people today feel disillusioned about corporate loyalty. This feels like another path—another option.
Molly:
Absolutely. One of the things I love about this industry is that no matter where you come from, if you show grit, grind, and grace, you can build an incredible career. Financial services and fintech offer real opportunities, especially when you build your network early and collaborate with others. I’ve seen women build extraordinary careers from very humble beginnings.
Rick:
There’s also value here for organizations trying to recruit and develop great people with the right support system.
Molly:
For sure. Many women who’ve built amazing careers want to give back and leave a legacy. Athena’s Council gives them a way to do that.
Rick:
Almost no one in this industry ends up where they planned to be—and they’re often happy about it. How did your own career unfold?
Molly:
Relationships made all the difference. Not just surface-level connections, but real relationships—knowing people, their families, and having mentors who opened doors and shared ideas.
I started in fintech marketing, where I spent a lot of time getting to know customers. Along the way, I realized how many incredible women were in our industry—and how invisible they often were. It felt like a secret. That’s what sparked my mission to connect them and shine a light on their talent.
Rick:
What’s ahead for Athena’s Council in 2026?
Molly:
We’re expanding our meetups and focus areas, including an AI Lab, a LinkedIn Squad, and weekly meetings for women in career transition. We’ll keep building relationships, welcoming new members, and finding ways to collaborate—because careers in this industry are always evolving, and no one should have to navigate that alone.
Rick:
How can someone learn more or get involved?
Molly:
Visit athenascouncil.org or send me a DM on LinkedIn. I’m always happy to connect.
Rick:
If you’re not connected to Molly Dowy, you should be. And if you’re a woman ready to do great things in your career, Athena’s Council may be exactly what you’re looking for. Molly, we’ll definitely have you back again.
Molly:
I’d love that. Thanks so much for having me.
Rick:
Thanks to all of you for tuning in.
