Podcasting as a Media Training Tool for Executives
There’s a reason we love having our public relations clients appear on our Strategic Targeting and Rick’s Room podcasts. Podcasting is a fantastic media training tool.
Podcasts give executives and subject matter experts a safe but valuable space to build their confidence and clarify their message before they go live on other electronic mediums or the keynote stage.
At RGA PR, we use podcasting as a bridge between internal expertise and external influence. It’s just a nice bonus that they also make great marketing tools for our clients.
For our shows, we keep the format conversational but controlled. There’s less pressure than a live broadcast or speech, but guests still need to stay on message and speak clearly.
Recording a podcast helps executives refine their storytelling and learn to handle tough or unexpected questions. They can stumble during the recording, and it can be adjusted in post-production. When they review the recording, they have a template they can practice to answer similar questions.
Better yet, once the final podcast is produced, the content lives on. It can be edited, repurposed into articles, or shared as short clips. It’s not just training—it’s marketing.
The Strategic Targeting Format
Our strategic issues podcast follows a simple structure, based on four questions:
- What’s one issue you consider a strategic priority?
- Why is it important now?
- What do industry players risk by not considering this now?
- What benefits spring from focusing on it now?
These four questions help guests get to the heart of their message, and our team ensures they sound their best. We provide light prep beforehand and editing afterward—all with the goal of making our clients comfortable and confident.
The Rick’s Room Podcast
Our second podcast is even more relaxed, but can be potentially more powerful. Based on the conversations that often occur in the hotel lobby of a conference hotel at the end of a long day, this show allows our executives to share an authentic side of themselves by simulating a more intimate setting.
Questions are often considered in advance but the answers are not scripted.
You can find episodes of these shows on our YouTube Channel at https://www.youtube.com/@rga-podcasting.
In both cases, once the interview is complete and the podcast produced, we help clients share it widely. That includes:
- Blog recaps
- Social media snippets
- Email newsletter features
- Internal content for sales or recruiting
All of this increases visibility and adds polish to our client’s positioning. When other podcast producers view this content, it gets our executives invited to other podcasts, which multiplies all of the benefits.
