winning trust in business

Win More Business by Winning Trust

In my work over the past 18 years, I’ve found that four problems are primarily responsible for keeping a company from making sales. If your company suffers from one or more of these, every sale will be hard-won. If you don’t have these problems, selling becomes easy.

I’ve already written about the first three:

And now for the fourth problem. In my experience, this is the hardest to solve.

Some businesses, either because their offerings don’t really deliver or their executives just aren’t respected, will find this problem almost impossible to solve.

Hopefully, this doesn’t sound familiar to you.

You’ve got the traffic. You’re sharing content your audience cares about. You’ve clarified your value proposition so prospects can quickly see how you solve their problems.

But somehow, you’re still not closing deals.

In my experience, this all comes down to one critical missing element: your prospects don’t trust you.

Even when every other part of your go-to-market strategy is working, a lack of trust will stop your prospects cold.

In B2B, especially, where the cost of choosing the wrong vendor can be enormous, no one wants to make the mistake of working with someone they can’t trust.

Trust Is the Currency of the Marketplace

If your prospects don’t trust you, they won’t take the next step, no matter how good your product seems to be.

Trust isn’t built overnight. It’s built over time, through consistent, credible communication and third-party validation.

That’s where public relations comes in.

Good PR isn’t just about getting your name in the news. It’s about shaping your reputation in the market through trusted voices.

When you appear in respected trade publications, get quoted by industry experts, or contribute thought leadership to conversations your buyers care about, you earn authority.

Every article, interview, or byline is a signal to the market: this company knows what it’s doing. It’s safe to trust them.

PR as a Strategic Trust Builder

Public relations helps build trust in a few key ways.

Third-party credibility: When someone else, especially a trusted industry outlet, tells your story, it carries more weight than when you say it yourself.

Visibility in trusted channels: Showing up consistently in places your prospects already come for news and information increases familiarity. And familiarity builds comfort.

Humanizing your leadership: Buyers don’t just evaluate companies; they evaluate the people behind them. Smart PR puts your leaders in the spotlight, showing their expertise and values in action.

A steady cadence of earned media and owned content builds a reputation that precedes the sales call. That makes your prospects more receptive and more ready to move forward.

The hardest thing to earn is often the most valuable. In a crowded market, trust becomes the differentiator. It’s the foundation of every long-term customer relationship, and it’s what allows all your other marketing efforts to get results.

If you’ve done the hard work to attract attention and clearly communicate your value, don’t let a lack of trust be the reason you lose the sale.

Let’s talk about how PR can help you earn the credibility you need to close more business.
